D.J. Smith founded CiV Digital in November 2001 after nearly a decade of leadership roles in PR, venture-backed companies and the federal government. In the pre-Web days of the Internet, he designed some of the original websites for Members of Congress in the U.S House of Representatives. He led teams which built key components of the original THOMAS system at the Library of Congress and projects which provided public access to the results of Congressional roll call votes and committee information.

After spending 8 years building online systems on Capitol Hill, he joined a division of a large global PR firm in order to build their digital public affairs practice. He then worked for a venture-backed company, Voter.com, where as Director of Product Management, he worked with Warner Jones to build an online platform that was rated by Forbes Magazine as the top online source of political information in 2001.

Over the years, his clients have included the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Department of Defense (DoD), the White House, numerous Fortune 500 companies, and several venture-backed companies and startups.

D.J. Smith is also co-founder of Boston-based joint venture WebDriven, with his long-time business partner and collaborator, Warner Jones.

D.J. has been an investor, partner and advisor in a number of innovative companies & projects, including:

D.J. also invests significant time and energy in social good projects and serves as advisor to several non-profit organizations including Blood:Water Mission, Art Music Justice, and NY WEB Center (PRIDE), a school-based movement in New York City which employs hip hop media to create opportunity and hope for inner-city youth. He serves on the board of The Washington Institute for Faith, Vocation & Culture, Lwala Community Alliance and Free for Life International.
